Topic: Electronic Court Reporting in Minnesota Courts

In courtroom proceedings, most attorneys and litigants presume the record is being captured, but they are not aware of how it is being done. For a variety of reasons, digital court reporting is being used in more and more courtrooms. In 2019 it will be a requirement that a digital recording be made of every proceeding in every courtroom in the state. This presentation will describe how the digital record is captured, the role of an official court reporter who is assigned to work for a district court judge, and to educate the paralegal community that these are jobs they are qualified to do.

Speaker: Margaret Ann Morgan, AAERT CER CET

Margaret Morgan is an official electronic court reporter in Rochester. She was hired by Judge Gerard Ring in 1992. Since then she worked for Judge Jodi Williamson, Judge Joseph Chase, and Judge Pamela King. She has served on the board of the American Association of Electronic Reporters and transcribers as director, vice president, and president. Before working for the Minnesota Judicial Branch, Margaret worked as a legal assistant for civil litigation and insurance defense law firms in Minneapolis.
