Law Day was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower as a “day of national dedication to the principle of government under law.” It is celebrated by many organizations throughout the country, including bar associations, educational institutions, professional associations, and community groups.Law Day 2017 – 14th Amendment, Transforming American Democracy, provides us the opportunity to explore the Fourteenth Amendment and how it has shaped American Law and Society. The Fourteenth Amendment provides for citizenship, due process, and equal protection, as well as providing a role in extending the reach of the Bill of Rights to the states.
Liberty Bell Award
As part of Law Day, the American Bar Association developed the Liberty Bell Award, to acknowledge outstanding community service. The award has been presented to outstanding leaders in the legal community for over 40 years. This year, MPA has decided to join hundreds of other legal organizations in presenting the Liberty Bell Award to one of our members.
ELIGIBILITY: The candidate must be a member of the MPA, and the nomination must be submitted on the official nomination form. MPA members, attorneys, law firm administrators, and community members may present a nomination. All members are eligible for this award regardless of their membership level.
CRITERIA: The winner will be chosen based on their commitment to stimulating a sense of civic responsibility and contributing to good government in the community.
SELECTION: Nominations will be specifically judged on the nominee’s commitment to advancing the protections provided by the Fourteenth Amendment. This may include, but is not limited to:
DEADLINE: Nominations are due no later than Monday, April 24, 2017 and should be submitted online below.AWARD: The winner will be announced via e-mail on Law Day, May 1, 2017. Presentation of the award will occur at the MPA Annual Convention on Thursday, May 11, 2017. The winner will receive a certificate, free attendance to the MPA Annual Convention, and a feature in MPA’s Citations newsletter.
Law Day Quiz
In celebration of Law Day 2017, MPA will share a quiz with our members on the 14th Amendment. A winner will be chosen randomly from those with the highest score. Each question is worth 1 point and all questions relate to the Fourteenth Amendment. The quiz will be open from April 24-28, 2017, and the winner announced May 1, 2017.
