Definition of a Paralegal: A paralegal is a person qualified through education, training or work experience to perform substantive legal work that requireds knowledge of legal concepts and is customarily, but not exclusively, performed by a lawyer. This person may be retained or employed by a lawyer, law office, governmental agency or other entity or may be authorized by administrative, statutory or court authority to perform this work (this definition includes those individuals with administrative, statutory or court authority, who perform substantive legal work directly for the public).
VOTING MEMBER ($100.00) Shall be employed in the state of Minnesota as a paralegal (defined above) at the time of application for or renewal of membership.
GREATER MINNESOTA VOTING MEMBER ($85.00) Shall be employed in the state of Minnesota as a paralegal (defined above) but their employers office is located outside the following counties: Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington (a/k/a the Seven County Twin Cities Metro Area).
ASSOCIATE MEMBER (NON-VOTING) ($75.00) A person who is not employed by a Sustaining Member or a company/agency that provides services to law offices, corporation or any other entities, and either:

is seeking first-time employment as a paralegal following completion of a paralegal studies program; or
-
has been previously, but is not now employed as a paralegal; or
-
is currently employed as a paralegal outside the state of Minnesota
STUDENT MEMBER (NON-VOTING) ($45.00) A person who is currently enrolled in a paralegal studies program or is serving a paralegal internship at the time of application for or renewal of membership.
PARALEGAL EDUCATOR MEMBER (VOTING) ($75.00) A person who is employed, or has been employed, as a paralegal educator at the time of application for or renewal of membership.
SUSTAINING MEMBER (NON-VOTING) ($200.00) Any firm, coporation, agency or other company providing services to law offices/firms, corporations or any other entities, or an individual (who does not meet the Individual Sustaining Member Criteria), who is interested in supporting and furthering the goals and purposes of MPA and does not meet the criteria for the other MPA Membership Classifications. (Sustaining Members are allowed to have only 2 members per entity/firm/corporation/other company.)
INDIVIDUAL SUSTAINING MEMBER (NON-VOTING) ($75.00) A person who is employed by either:

A firm, coporation, agency or other company providing services to law offices/firms, corporations or any other entity and their employer does not wish to be a Sustaining Member; or
-
A Sustaining Member that has already reached its 2 member per entity/firm/corporation limit.
MPA SPONSORSHIPS MPA also offers Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, Friends of the MPA, and Event Sponsorships. Sponsorship includes the Sustaining Membership fee. Please see our Sponsorship Page for more information.
MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS
NEW MEMBER APPLICATION: For those who have never joined MPA or have let their membership lapse for more than one year.
RENEWAL MEMBER APPLICATION: For those who have paid dues for MPA membership and were a member of MPA in 2009. IMPORTANT NOTICE: If your renewal application is postmarked after February 28, 2010, a $10.00 late fee will be added to your 2010 membership dues payment.
