 PACE Ambassador’s Report
May 2007

PACE AMBASSADOR’S CONFERENCE
On May 19-20, 2007, I will be attending the 2007 PACE Ambassador’s Conference in Cleveland, Ohio. The Conference will be held at the law firm of Squires, Sanders & Dempsey. Topics to be discussed include myths about the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE), the status of the Tier II Ad Hoc Committee, an update on study materials, obstacles/excuses for not taking PACE, and an exam update summary. I will provide a report to the MPA membership about this conference in a future Citations.

PACE BREAKOUT SESSION AT MPA ANNUAL MEETING
As was noted in the PACE-Setters column in the April Citations, Lori Brandon and I are going to be presenting a break-out session at the MPA Annual Convention on June 14, 2007. During the break-out session, we will discuss why PACE was developed, who is able to take it, how to prepare for and take the exam, how PACE fits into regulation, why paralegals take PACE, the benefits of taking PACE and why you might consider taking the exam at this time. We hope that anyone who has any interest in taking PACE or who might have any questions regarding PACE will attend this breakout session.

PACE STUDY GROUP
There has been an interest in getting a PACE study group started. We will be working with interested persons to form a PACE study group within the next month. If you would like to participate in this study group, please contact either Lori or me. Please also contact us if you have any questions regarding PACE or if you need any other assistance in getting started with studying or preparing to take PACE.

Lori and I find it ironic that as your Co-PACE Ambassadors, I was the first paralegal in Minnesota to take and pass PACE (March 1997), and Lori was the last person in Minnesota to do so (December 2005). Our goal is to do whatever we can to help others successfully complete PACE. We would like to see the number of RPs in Minnesota increase in 2007!!!!

The Minnesota Paralegal Association does not endorse or make referrals to any legal service providers.  We strongly recommend that persons in need of legal services seek the advice of an attorney. At the present time, Minnesota has no minimum qualifications for persons calling themselves paralegals. The risk to the consumer of using such a person to provide legal services, without attorney oversight, is very high.
The Minnesota State Bar Association offers attorney referrals as do both the Hennepin and Ramsey County Bar Associations.
